Big Sphere

Aluminum, Paint, Granite, 5 feet cubed

Private Commission-South Freeport, Maine - 2018

Big Sphere evolved as a commission from a similar sculpture titled Little Sphere. Little Sphere is a six inch sculpture made of bent-laminated wood, and the form posed unique challenges as to redesigning it to be larger and live outdoors. By working with sculptor Mark Templeton, we subtly recreated the forms to allow them to be cut and welded in aluminum.

Little Sphere was the initial inspiration for Big Sphere. Originally titled “A Way to Move Forward”, this sculpture developed during the run up to and aftermath of the 2016 Presidential election.  The divisiveness and incivility in the public discourse approaching the election and the cries for unity and healing heard following that event, created a swirl of confusing and unsettled feelings.  It seemed we, as a society, had veered into ugly territory preferring to disconnect from one another rather than seek to understand another opinion or viewpoint.

A Way to Move Forward is my interpretation of how to heal from this experience. The sculpture is a sphere trying to reunify, trying to protect itself and heal as a whole entity rather than individual parts.

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference. Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.
